The Buccaneer

About

The opulent Buccaneer, a family-run business that has been operating since the 17th century, is the oldest resort on the U.S. Virgin Islands. The first structure on the island was constructed in 1653 by Charles Martel, a Knight of Malta, out from the view of coastal marauders. Alexander Hamilton spent his early years living in the “French Greathouse,” which eventually served as a sugar house on the estate of the Danish Governor von Prock. Michael Shoy, who gave the place its name, purchased the site and planted cotton on its sizable amount of land. After that, the property served as a cattle ranch until the Armstrong family transformed it into a full-service inn in 1947.
