The Hôtel DU PONT in Wilmington, which opened on January 15, 1913, was one of the most opulent hotels of the Gilded Age of America and a direct competitor to the best hotels in Europe. 25,000 people visited the magnificent chambers in the first week to view the elaborate woodwork, mosaic and terrazzo floors, handcrafted chandeliers, and gilded passageways that a large number of French and Italian craftsmen had built.
