The Paseo was developed by Oklahoman G.A. Nichols in 1929 as the first shopping district north of downtown. The curved, two-block street has maintained its Spanish revival architecture with original stucco buildings and clay tile roofs still intact. The Paseo is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The arts have always been a part of the Paseo. The Elm's, a resident art gallery and studio built in 1920, located at 27th and Walker, was the first Oklahoma City artist studio and gallery. In the 1950s, Paseo was home to small businesses, student partying and jazz clubs. The 1960s brought the counter culture with its creativity, free spirit and problems. The Paseo began its transition into an arts district in the 1970s. The first annual Paseo Arts Festival was held Memorial Day weekend in 1977 and the Paseo Arts Association was formed in 1982 to organize and further energize its place as Oklahoma's arts district. Today a vibrant group of artists with substantial involvement and support from the larger community continues to build The Paseo Arts District into one of the most creative art venues in the country. The Paseo is now home to 17 galleries and more than 60 artists, all within walking distance. Intermingled with the galleries are fabulous restaurants, a coffee house, clothing boutique, gift shop, yoga studio and other businesses. The Paseo Arts Association is a non-profit, 501 c 3 organization. In January 2008 the PAA adopted this revised mission statement: The Paseo Arts Association seeks to preserve and maintain the Paseo in Oklahoma City as an historic arts district. We seek to foster an environment of cultural exchange between the public and the arts through performances, festivals and educational programming.

A renaissance city. A Cinderella story. A transformation that continues. Top-of-mind worldwide, with numbers that work in your favor. This is the new American city: the 21st-century Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City is unlike any other city in the world. Born in a single day at the sound of a gunshot, Oklahoma City was settled by a historic land run. Angelo Scott, a journalist who staked his claim in the run, wrote at the time about the spirit of the city, saying it has "an attitude that all things are possible if people are willing to take a chance and embrace the future without hesitation or reservation." That same spirit lives today as the city undergoes a renaissance. Public and private partnerships over the last 10 years have dramatically transformed the face of the city, staking a claim for the future as a pre-eminent American city. Oklahoma City offers everything you look for in a modern metropolitan community - an abundance of the arts, quality health care, excellence in education and more. And it does so without high costs, energy shortages, smog or traffic congestion. It is a distinctly livable city where you can chase your business dreams and still enjoy a rich quality of life.

The Boathouse District is a unique destination for athletes, metro area families and visitors to Oklahoma City. Athletes look forward to rowing or paddling on the district’s world-class 4000m race and training course, while families and visitors can get on the water in a kayak, take a bike ride on the 13+ miles of trails, enjoy RIVERSPORT Adventures and now, enjoy whitewater rafting and Love’s tubing in RIVERSPORT Rapids.

We also invite you to enjoy the art and architecture of the Boathouse District. The Compass Rose sculpture by internationally acclaimed artist Owen Morrell graces the entrance to the Boathouse District, and everyone appreciates the iconic architecture of the structures along the river, each designed by architect Rand Elliott, Elliott & Associates. The new CHK|Central Boathouse includes a live music venue and an art gallery. Together, the architecture and athleticism of the Boathouse District are becoming recognized as a world-class destination by local and international visitors alike.
