The original Menger Hotel, which was constructed on the site of Menger’s brewery, the first of its kind in Texas, is only a few steps away from the famed Alamo. Teddy Roosevelt, Sam Houston, Generals Lee and Grant, and former U.S. Presidents McKinley, Taft, and Eisenhower have all stayed at “the best hotel west of the Mississippi River,” which opened on February 1, 1859.
This imposing building is recognized for its exquisite architecture, including a 19th-century wing that has been renovated and features Victorian-style guestrooms, priceless antique furniture, and artworks that all contribute to a feeling of ancient elegance.
