The Mountain View House had improbable beginnings on a soggy night in 1865, but it quickly gained a reputation for its gracious hospitality and breathtaking surroundings. Near the Dodge farmhouse, a stagecoach traveling to Montreal collided with a muddy rut and toppled.
The passengers were given such a warm welcome at the Dodge residence that they stayed longer. The group met again the following summer and persuaded the Dodges to open Mountain View Home, which they ran until 1979. It was shut down in the 1980s and reopened in 2002 following a $20 million restoration that enhanced its vintage charm and added a number of exquisite new guestrooms and suites as well as the full-service Tower Spa, which provides a 360-degree view of 57 stunning mountain peaks.
