Explore the history… Buttonwood Colored School was a ray of light for its students. Opened in 1926 during this nation’s period of segregation, the 1st through 8th graders who attended Buttonwood found a sense of joy and camaraderie within the school’s walls. While the world outside could be cruel, Buttonwood offered a close knit community where students could sing, dance, and play ball together, all while learning.

Now, through the efforts of a group of alumni, Buttonwood Colored School is a thriving museum and community center. Saved from demolition, and restored to its original state, this beautiful building stands as a testament to the perseverance of this community during a time of pain and injustice.
