New Residence Complex Opens at Memorial University of Newfoundland

Memorial University of Newfoundland (St. John’s campus), has officially opened its new residence complex, Macpherson College, which is comprised of two residences: Cluett Hall and Shiwak Hall. The names chosen for the new residence memorialize the contributions of three Newfoundlanders and Labradorians active in the First World War. The names were chosen after extensive consultation, and align with the broader commemoration activities with Memorial University’s WW100 program.

The state-of-the-art residence provides affordable accommodations from May to August, for conferences, workshops, and group bookings. Macpherson College is designed with:
• Two-bedroom suites with washroom and shower in each suite
• VoIP phones in each bedroom with local calling
• Wireless internet access
• Laundry facilities
• Lounge area on each floor
• Meeting room and board room
• Outdoor stage/bandstand and large green space

Macpherson College is proudly LEED silver certified with low-flush toilets, recycling stations, bicycle racks, energy saving lighting and much more. Apart from being environmentally conscious, there are also several barrier-free units, elevators, and a paved walkway along the neighboring Burton’s Pond. Many rooms within the College also offer a beautiful view of the city of St. John’s and surrounding neighborhood.

Macpherson College is ideally located in the center of Memorial University’s St. John’s campus adjacent to walking trails and on the edge of a 3,400 acre urban park (Pippy Park). The university offers innovative conference rooms with wireless internet access, state of the art audio/visual; tele- and video-conferencing capabilities. The conference staff at Memorial University can help plan, organize and manage your events including academic and business conferences, summer camps, weddings, receptions and more!

Come stay with us, explore our campus and our city and you’ll find that not only is St. John’s home to the largest university in Atlantic Canada, but it is also the youngest – and coolest – province in Canada. We are a city rich in culture and on your visit you will encounter fashionistas, chefs, musicians and many more colourful characters! Our oceans also provide ample opportunity to see some unique “species” so enjoy a day on a boat, having close encounters with humpback whales and icebergs and don’t forget to visit one of our National Historic Sites such as Cape Spear Lighthouse, the most easterly point in North America or Signal Hill site of the first transatlantic wireless transmission.
