CLARYVILLE — Frost Valley YMCA held its 12th-annual Roadside Cleanup along Frost Valley Road, Claryville Road, and into the hamlet of Claryville on April 18. Through the sunny morning, 40 staff members rolled up their sleeves to pick up trash along more than 16 miles of roadside and riverbanks and throughout main camp.

This annual cleanup effort began in 2006 as a way for Frost Valley staff to give back to the local community, to take care of the environment, and to help protect the “forever-wild” Catskills — and the staff has continued to do so every spring for over a decade.

“We have a strong commitment to stewardship here at Frost Valley, and that includes reaching out to our local communities," says Katia Martin, Frost Valley’s Director of Community Programs, who coordinates the event. "After winter passes, we take our spring cleaning to the road and waterways, and our staff members are always more than willing to volunteer their time to help keep our community — and the Earth — clean.”

Armed with trash bags and gloves (and positive spirits) Frost Valley staff members gave nearly 80 hours of their time all before 11 a.m. Frost Valley considers local community outreach and support to be vital. CEO Jerry Huncosky initatied the Roadside Clean-Up as a way of supporting the local community, but it also ties in with part of Frost Valley’s mission to maintain environmental stewardship. “We believe in living our cause — our staff practices what they preach and they are always more than happy to give back to this beautiful region in which we live. I think I speak for each of us when I say we geniuinely look forward to this Annual Roadside Cleanup each year,” Huncosky says.
