Flashback Photo: 90 Years Young

By Selena Fragassi

Kansas City may be known for its history of jazz, barbecue, and baseball, but the one place that everyone loves to call home is the historic Arvest Bank Theatre at The Midland, which celebrates its incredible 90th anniversary in 2017. Originally called the Midland Theatre, it opened in October 1927 as a thriving silent motion picture theater-the third largest in the country at the time-seen in the picture here.

As trends have changed over the years, the building has transformed into a professional bowling stadium, traditional movie theatre, and now concert venue operated by AEG Presents and the Cordish Company, after a multimillion-dollar renovation. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, the building still bears many of the original French-Italian Baroque design details, including 500,000-plus feet of gold leaf, five giant Czechoslovakian hand-cut crystal chandeliers, and a room made entirely of Tiffany glass tiles.
