Flashback Photo: Old-Fashioned Glamour

The story of Huddleston Ballroom at the University of New Hampshire

In any given year, UNH’s Durham campus hosts large numbers of events in its marquee Huddleston Ballroom, from weddings and reunions to political speakers and conferences. But the history of this gilded room—with large arched windows and an original fireplace—goes back to 1919. This is the year the ballroom opened, only five years after Eric T. Huddleston was first appointed as UNH’s supervising campus architect. The ballroom, housed in Huddleston Hall, was the first of many buildings he helped erect on campus up until his retirement in 1946, a time during which he also helped create the first college-level architectural program in northern New England.

Originally, Huddleston Ballroom served as a dining hall on campus, as seen in this photo from 1922. It served this role until 2003 when it was transformed into an event space. Ironically, UNH’s current president is named Mark Huddleston, though there’s no relation to the visionary behind this special venue.
