Airlie Center’s Local Food Project Offers Lecture Series on Gardening

Warrenton, VA—Airlie Center, a pioneer among sustainable and green conference centers, is pleased to announce an upcoming gardening lecture and workshop series. Hosted by Airlie Center’s Local Food Project (LFP), the seven-lecture series addresses topics such as organic gardening, flower arranging and beekeeping. Gardeners of all levels of experience and ability have the opportunity to learn from experts and take home tips that will help them garden productively throughout the 2013 season.

Established in 1998, the Local Food Project at Airlie shows the significant role local food can play in an institutional setting. Garden staff work closely with Airlie’s chefs to incorporate flavorful, nutritious, fresh-picked produce into delicious dining room meals. The LFP includes a four-acre organic garden and features a passive solar hoop house, allowing food to be grown year round.

“One of the fundamental goals of the Local Food Project is to educate and empower visitors to Airlie to participate in their own food production,” said Breanna Detwiler, Airlie’s Environmental Policy Coordinator. “The LFP is a model from which we hope visitors can draw inspiration for their own gardens. We’re excited to partner with regional gardening experts to encourage the creation of productive and beautiful organic gardens.”

The workshops begin on March 16 and continue throughout the 2013 growing season.
  • March 16: Garden Preparation and Greenhouse Growing with Paul Hutcheson, Master Gardener and CEO of Windmill Heights Garden Center in Culpeper, Virginia. Cost: $10
  • April 25: Open House and Organic Gardening 101 with LFP Head Gardener Kae Yowell. Cost: Free
  • May 11: The Art of Flower Arranging with flower designer Hardie Newton. Cost: $75/$175
  • June 8: Making Fruit Jams and Jellies with Margaret Hutcheson, owner of Sunrise Gardens in Madison County, Virginia. Cost: $30
  • September 8: Celebration of Bees with local beekeeping groups. Cost: TBD
  • September 29: All About Organic Flower Bulbs with EcoTulips President Jeroen Koeman. Cost: $15
  • October 26: Fall Festival with LFP Head Gardener Kae Yowell. Cost: $10
