Planner Tips

find the perfect, unique venue.

here's how it works. search for venues, get rates, book the venue. it's simple. it's free.

Going green with event decor

The holidays and special occasions come around so often that it seems like we've just taken down the tinsel and mistletoe before we are decorating our homes with green shamrocks for St. Paddy's Day, brightly coloured eggs for Easter, or balloons and streamers for children's birthday parties. With all of these luminous liners and plastic novelties, come mountains of rubbish destined for the landfills.

Tips for hosting a green event

We all love parties, the holidays and special occasions, but with each celebration comes the opportunity to spend a lot of cash on decorations, food, clothes, venues and the bits and bobs that make that perfect party. That said, you have the potential to make sure that your festivities do not cost the earth - in more ways than one! Environmentally friendly festivities are just as easy to plan and throw as their not-so-green counterparts. By choosing local, seasonal, organic, recycled or reusable items, one can add massive amounts of charm and character to any event.

Choose the Right Keynote Speaker

If you want to impress your guests, booking a keynote speaker to headline your event is a great way to encourage people to come. But how do you know which speaker to select? What exactly will he or she talk about? Will the people in attendance like the topic and the presentation?  Will the speaker repeat messages from previous speakers?  What are other ways to improve the event without an expensive speaker?

After you have asked these questions, it’s time to think about important ways to select your speaker.

Hats off to the royal wedding trends

A lot has been said of the royal wedding. The dress. The kiss (x2). The hats. The guestlist. And did we mention the hats?

Just as Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ wedding launched several trends, Kate and William are paving the way and cementing a few other trends for weddings.

All the World's A-Twitter

I may be a bit behind on the whole Twitter phenomenon, but now that I understand exactly what it is, I couldn't help but think that this could be a very useful tool in the meetings and event industry. For those of you who still aren't quite sure what I am talking about, twitter allows people all over the world to follow the sources/subjects most relevant to them - in real time.

Post Your Events on Yahoo Upcoming

I will soon be taking a trip with my family to Orlando, and have been looking for things to do while we are there. Where do you find events and happenings? One place is Upcoming on yahoo ( It’s a great site to find comedy events, festivals, educational activities, music concerts, and other type of events.

Hey AIG...try this for your next meeting.

Looks like Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif. is requesting that AIG come forward with details about the costs of their meetings, events, incentives and retreats held this year as well as those they have planned over the next 6 months. I don't know how the rest of you feel, but I'm glad SOMEONE is getting after them on this. It's really hard not to be irate about a 'business as usual' approach when the feds are bailing them out.

What NOT to Do When the Meeting Industry Turns from a Sellers' to a Buyer's Market.

Meeting Planner Joan Eisenstodt and venue-supplier Grace Markum share 10 things venues should NOT do when the market begins to shift from a sellers' to a buyer's market.
  1. Don’t offer deep discounts.
  2. Don’t cut the advertising and marketing budgets.
  3. Don’t make your marketing sound like a fire sale.
  4. Don’t cut the number of people on the sales team.
  5. Don’t fall off buyers’ radar screens.
  6. Don’t become invisible.
  7. Don’t overlook the SMERF mark

What I did on my summer vacation.

Summer VacationI'm really good at setting business goals for Unique Venues and I'm even better at creating goals for my husband and 3 boys. I'm just not so good at creating personal goals for myself. Until one day in early June when I found myself at a triathlon party...I mean meeting.
