About

About The Buttonwood Colored School Museum and Community Center

Explore the history... Buttonwood Colored School was a ray of light for its students. Opened in 1926 during this nation’s period of segregation, the 1st through 8th graders who attended Buttonwood found a sense of joy and camaraderie within the school’s walls. While the world outside could be cruel, Buttonwood offered a close knit community where students could sing, dance, and play ball together, all while learning.

Now, through the efforts of a group of alumni, Buttonwood Colored School is a thriving museum and community center. Saved from demolition, and restored to its original state, this beautiful building stands as a testament to the perseverance of this community during a time of pain and injustice. Come and experience the history and connect with the deep roots of this rich community. Tour the museum or plan your next special event in our fully equipped and beautifully restored facility.

Come see the beautiful wood floors, crafted windows and classic venue for yourself.
