President Lincoln's Cottage
AFRH-W Box 1315
3700 North Capitol Street NW
Washington, District of Columbia 20011 USA
In June of 1862, Abraham Lincoln and his family packed their possessions and moved from the White House to the thirty-four room “cottage” on the grounds of the Soldiers’ Home in rural Washington, DC. The Lincolns lived here during his presidency – through the summer and fall of 1862, 1863, and 1864. President Lincoln lived at the Cottage while he developed the Emancipation Proclamation and made many critical decisions about the course of the Civil War. Later Presidents would also retreat to the hilltop Cottage while admiring the Capitol and city below. Declared by an executive order- it is the only National Monument in the Nation's Capital.
Following a $15 million restoration by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, President Lincoln’s Cottage and the surrounding grounds have recently opened to the public for the first time. In addition to offering guided tours, exhibitions, and award winning educational/leadership programs, this new museum is available for private and corporate events. The Gothic Revival styled Cottage, adjacent Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center, and surrounding bucolic and historic landscape provide unique and memorable backdrops for entertaining. Given the great historic significance of President Lincoln’s Cottage, we want to bring this presidential retreat to your attention as a possible setting for events including dinners, receptions, private tours, and meetings.
